We decided to start this Gallery section in order to help give you some ideas on what you can do with these images when you add color to them.

A lot of folks who visit our site wonder why we only sell black & white images.

It's kind of a long story, however it all started because advertising artwork produced in the '40s & '50s was generally black & white. Artists during that era became very adept at creating very striking and dynamic compositions without using any color.

Q. Why did artists of the '50s cease to produce this type of b&w advertsing art?

A. Modern printing techniques developed around 1960 allowed for the printing of highly complex, full color artwork. The b&w drawing style which had been established during the previous 2 decades was suddenly considered obsolete, and was quickly eliminated in favor of the newer, full color artwork.

Over the subsequent 4 decades, artists became so accustomed to having all these color options, that the techniques used for drawing high contrast, b&w artwork were lost.

Now this style of artwork (which we call "retro art") has become highly revered and is now in big demand, as people begin to realize how powerful and dynamic it really is, never mind it's obvous nostalgic value.

Retro art is also very popular with graphic artists because it allows them to add their own color schemes - something which can be very awkward to do with full color clipart.

HELPFUL TIP:

The best way to tell if a drawing is any good is if it works in black & white.

Many artists will try to make their drawings look better by adding color to them, however a good drawing should look great without any color at all.

If you begin with a piece of artwork which works well in b&w, it will be that much more dynamic once you add color to it.

So now you know why we spend so much time making sure our drawings work well in b&w!
